The department was established in 1974 to provide specialized training for students in speciality "Electric power engineering". Through the years the name of the speciality has been changed into "Electric power plants, networks and systems" and "Electric power engineering and electrical equipment". Since its creation the department has graduated over 1000 electrical engineers, who have successful careers at all of the structures of the power systems around the world (thermo and hydro electric power plants, nuclear power plants, substations, power supply companies, transmission system operators and etc.) as desiner engineers, chief engineers, yard masters, managers of electrical companies, researchers etc.

The department offers the following Phd programs – "Power plants and substations", "Power networks and systems", "High voltage equipment" and "Electrical insulation and cable systems".
